How is to be my own boss?

So, I have decided to become my own boss. I am dreaming of lounging in my pajamas at 11:00, sipping coffee from my fancy mug, and telling my imaginary “boss” to go for a walk. Ah, the dream of freelancing or running my own business.… plot twist—I am my own boss, but also my client’s employee…who needs therapy, LOL.

Turns out, the whole “freedom” thing is more complicated than I thought:

  1. Clients control my paycheck, set the deadlines, they have the final say, and control my reputation.
  2. Endless emails, turning my inbox into the ultimate test of my self-worth
  3. No e-mails at all—do you want to talk about anxiety?
  4. The eternal fight against procrastination. Spoiler: It is a battle I am losing… and winning… depending on the hour, LOL.
  5. No one is handing out promotions, so I have to promote myself—assuming the clients are on board, of course.

You might be wondering why I stick with this if it sounds like a disaster. The truth? I love the feeling! It is chaotic, but it is mine. And there are perks:

  1. Ever heard the saying, “You attract what you are”? Well, lucky for me, that means I get to pick my clients, LOL.
  2. My dress code is sweatpants
  3. I get to set my own boundaries
  4. I get to say no if a client or a project asks for something that does not align with my values, expertise, or schedule—it is okay to say no!
  5. I get to meet so many wonderful furry family members—dogs who are very enthusiastic and cats who definitely judge my cleaning skills…and are not impressed!

In conclusion, being my own boss means having the freedom to build a business that works for me. The key? Striking the right balance between serving my clients and protecting my sanity. Sure, the clients may call the shots, but with a little smart boundary-setting, I’m in charge of how I show up.

Until next time,
Alma
