- Who are you?
My name is Bruno. I was born in the capital of Mexico, but I grew up in Mérida, where the meteorite that killed the dinosaurs fell.
- What are your hobbies and interests?
I am a fervent lover of video games and all things geek. Give me a comic book and I am happy. I also really enjoy movies, especially animated and action films. I actually like almost every genre except horror—not because they scare me but because they always seem absurd to me and I cannot get into the story.
- What brought you to Vancouver?
I am fulfilling my frustrated dreams, LOL. I am studying for a diploma in Fine Arts. I have loved art since I was little, but my parents did not see it as the best future for me. Now I have the opportunity to study something I have always wanted, and what better place than abroad?
- What would make you stay here?
The weather, without a doubt. I lived for over 20 years in a tropical area where summers reached up to 45 °C , and I never got used to such intense heat. I really enjoy Vancouver’s weather. Also, I love nature, and Vancouver is an incredible place to connect with it. I definitely prefer exploring the mountains over being in the middle of the jungle sweating and watching out for every creeping critter. And the food scene—I love trying food from all over the world; every restaurant is a delicious experience.
- What is the best advice you have ever received?
“Do not help those who do not want to be helped.” I know it might sound a bit harsh, but it is true. Often, we want to help people we care about or even strangers, but just because we want to help does not mean they are willing to accept it, and that can be frustrating. More recently, along the same lines, I read a manga with the line “you have no enemies,” and wow, it changed my life. I could talk for hours about the topic and the context, so let’s leave it at that.
- What are the top three places to visit or meals to try in Mérida?
In Mérida, oh boy, three meals are not nearly enough. They say there is a dish for every day of the year in Yucatán, and I can tell you it is what I miss the most, so I will recomend to try, Cochinita, panuchos, salbutes, longaniza, pibinal, lechon, and a long etc.
I would say you must visit the cenotes; they are huge holes in the middle of the jungle with crystal-clear water, truly beautiful. Also, the haciendas; there are many in the province, and each one is stunning. They are colonial-era constructions; many seem “abandoned,” but nature has reclaimed them, making them very beautiful with lots of history and nature.
