- Who are you?
I am Majito [pronunciation: Mah-hee-toh], from Mérida, Mexico, and I work in social media content creation. I am a recovering workaholic, learning to enjoy life outside of work.
- What are your hobbies and interests?
I enjoy reading, makeup, and recently, I have taken an interest in learning digital illustration. I am doing terribly at it. Does drinking coffee and trying craft beers count as a hobby? I am actually good at that.
I really love spending time outside of the house, and although my favorite place is always near the sea, in Vancouver I have learned to enjoy the forest and mountains. I try to go hiking as much as I can.
Regarding my interests, I love music and dance. Being a Broadway dancer and actress is my sueño guajiro.
I am passionate about topics like social responsibility, mental health, feminism, and personal growth.
- What brought you to Vancouver?
It is funny because I have never liked change. So, it still surprises me how I ended up here.
I saw my decision as a way to escape the intense burnout I was experiencing. Later, I left my job and began freelancing, building my own business. To my surprise, it went really well. In the end, I came to the city empowered by the freedom my work allowed me. I no longer felt the need to run away, and I am incredibly grateful that this journey led me here.
- What would make you stay here?
The trees, hahaha. Every day when I leave the house, I am amazed by how tall and green they are (even in winter, thanks to the moss).
As a woman, it is also incredibly motivating to be able to go out alone and feel safe.
- What is the best advice you have ever received?
Do not take anything personally. Most of the things people do are more about themselves than about you.
- What are the top three places to visit or meals to try in Mérida?
To eat:
Panuchos
Pib (though you can only find it during the Día de Muertos – Day of the Dead is a traditional Mexican holiday that honors and celebrates deceased loved ones)
Turkey soup
To visit:
Paseo de Montejo
Quinta Montes Molina
Even though they are only outside the city, everyone should visit a cenote
PS: a sueño guajiro is the way we call those unrealistic dreams in Mexico.
