Please avoid forming judgments based solely on this interview, as it offers only a snapshot of their perspective and experiences. Thank you for your consideration

  • Who are you?
My name is Mauricio Pantoja, and I come from Morelia, Michoacán, Mexico. In my city, we believe that mixing fruit, cheese, and salsa makes food that is like a gift from the gods.
  • What are your hobbies and interests?
I am an amateur photographer. I like to walk around the city and take photos of moments that show how interesting life is every day. I am also a quiet person who likes to stay at home. When I am at home, I cook many types of food, but I am very good at Mexican dishes. I also like to play video games in a competitive way. If you want to play any game with me, you can call me anytime!
  • What brought you to Vancouver?
I would like to say it is because of the many types of poutine, haha! But the truth is that I met my wife in Vancouver in 2022. We went crazy and decided to get married. After we were back in Mexico, we talked about all the good memories we had in Vancouver specially during summer on English bay. We decided to move here, just like the monarch butterfly.
  • What would make you stay here?
Right now, I feel like Hugo Pickles from Rugrats when he said, “I have lost control of my life.” What keeps me here is my love for my small family, literally small… my wife is very short (she is 1.59 meters tall, haha), and we also have two beautiful cats. I know we will have a better life here. Every day in Vancouver is a challenge, but it helps us grow in many ways.
  • What is the best advice you have ever received?
My dad is my best friend. He is the only person who can teach me something important by saying just one of his strange metaphors. When I have a difficult choice, I remember when he said: “In China, they say a goat jumped so high it stayed in the air. Can this be true? Maybe yes, maybe not.” (I know that sounds weird but In Spanish rhymes, LOL). He taught me that I should not take things personally. If I do not know what to do, I should relax and keep moving.
  • What are the top three places to visit or meals to try in Morelia?
The best place is the lake of Chupícuaro. It is less than one hour from the city. First, you can stop in Quiroga and buy 1 kilogram of carnitas and some Vickys (Victoria beers). Then you will have the perfect meal while enjoying a beautiful view.

One place you cannot miss is “Tacos Mary” at the Santo Niño market. They have the most delicious tacos!

Another must-visit is the city center. The sunsets here are beautiful because the buildings are made of pink stone, which reflects the warm colors of the evening sky. There is nothing better than taking a long walk and enjoying a nice dinner at one of the city’s terraces. In my opinion, the best option is the restaurant “Manglar.”
